Enjoy the Sunrise at Kelimutu Lake

Kelimutu Lake is one of many tourist attractions in Flores Island. There is a good reason for that. Kelimutu Lake is among many spots where you can enjoy the sunrise. At Kelimutu Lake, however, the scenery is simply breathtaking. This is especially true during sunrise. So if you plan to have a Komodo tour, be sure that Kelimutu Lake is included in the destination.

About Kelimutu Lake

Let us introduce Kelimutu Lake briefly. Kelimutu is the name of the mountain. The mount Kelimutu is an active volcano, one among many active volcanoes in Indonesia. There are three craters at its summit. These three craters are filled with water, thus creating lakes. These lakes are collectively known as Kelimutu Lake.

Do the lakes have names? Of course. In fact, the locals have a name for each of these lakes. Below are the names and their meanings.

  • The first lake is called Tiwu Ata Mbupu, which means ‘Lake of Old People.’ Among the three lakes, Tiwu Ata Mbupu is located westernmost. It usually has a blue color.
  • The second lake is called Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, which means ‘Lake of Young Men and Maidens.’ This lake is located very close to the third lake, separated only by a crater wall. This lake has a green color.
  • The third lake is called Tiwu Ata Polo, which means ‘Enchanted or Bewitched Lake.’ This lake has a red color.

What is amazing about Kelimutu Lake is that they not only have three different colors, their colors also change over time. The change occurs due to many factors, such as sunlight, discolorations due to chemical dissolutions and the water microorganisms in the lakes. The changes happen unpredictably, giving the lakes a mysterious aura.

Best Time to Visit

While Kelimutu Lake is magnificent to look at all year round, there are times that allow you to see the best scenery. Since Indonesia is a tropical country with dry and rainy seasons, the best time to visit is during the dry season, either in July or August. Keep in mind that July and August is peak season, so you should prepare your visit in advance.

As for the time to get on the lakes to see the scenery, the best time is during sunrise. We mentioned earlier that sunlight changes the colors of the lakes. You can witness this amazing phenomenon during sunrise. At sunrise, you will feel the most dramatic atmosphere on the lake as well.
